What is the Role of a School Board?

A recent article from the FXBG Advance highlighted survey results about the role of a School Board member.

This is an important question — and one that deserves serious consideration.

In my view, the role of a School Board is to help create, evaluate, and oversee programs, policies, and processes to ensure they are in compliance with State laws and regulations and meet the intent and expectations of the broader community. It requires a holistic approach — one that considers the needs of the entire school system and all its students.

While my opponents promote their hands-on experience, particularly in the special needs community — and their campaigns are rightly focused on that area — I also have direct experience working with families and students in this population. I understand the challenges they face and will advocate for inclusive solutions. That said, we must not lose sight of the fact that our schools serve a diverse student body. A School Board member must be prepared to make decisions that support all students.

To be effective in this role, I believe it’s essential to have real experience serving on boards and committees that hold organizations accountable — experience in setting and upholding high standards. If you compare the qualifications of all three candidates, I believe my record stands out. I have led efforts to create policies and provide oversight for community, nonprofit, and government agencies, including the Spotsylvania County Department of Social Services. In every case, I was not only a member of these boards — I was elected to lead them.

If we are serious about making progress toward Spotsylvania County Public Schools' vision, we need School Board members who are focused, experienced, and committed to the core responsibilities of the role. That’s what I bring to the table — and that’s the kind of leadership I believe our schools need.
