From Community Leadership to School Board Readiness

From 2017 to 2019, I served on the Lee’s Hill Community Homeowner’s Association Board of Directors, where I was elected by my peers to serve as Treasurer and President. After completing my term, my wife Sarah and I revitalized the Association’s Recreation Committee, organizing 3–4 kid-focused community events each year — including Easter egg hunts, movie nights at the pool, and holiday celebrations — to bring families together and strengthen our neighborhood spirit.

During my time on the Board, I led key initiatives to improve the Association’s governance and financial health. I helped reduce legal expenses by streamlining processes, updated outdated administrative resolutions, and modernized the operational structure of the Board.

As President, I made it a priority to be accessible and responsive to our neighbors. One example, I worked quickly to resolve a longstanding drainage issue that had impacted a homeowner for years — a solution was implemented just a few months after it was brought to my attention. I also remained engaged with office staff to ensure resident concerns were handled in a timely and effective manner.

So, what does this have to do with the School Board?

The Lee’s Hill Community Association represents over 2,000 homes and manages over a million-dollar budget. Leading this organization gave me valuable experience in generating consensus among board members, managing significant financial responsibilities, and being accountable to a large and diverse community. These same qualities are essential for a successful School Board member.

Like serving on a School Board, my HOA role often involved making difficult — and sometimes unpopular — decisions for the greater good of the community. I’ve learned when to stand firm in the face of pressure, but also when to listen, reflect, and revise a decision based on meaningful community feedback.

Our schools deserve proven leaders — not ones who are learning on the job. The future of our students is too important to risk on inexperience. I bring not only a track record of service and leadership but also a deep understanding of what it takes to govern responsibly, act with integrity, and stay focused on what truly matters: academic excellence for every student.
