Does Supervisors Support to YMCA Come at the Expense of Other Regional Partners?

According to an April 24th FY2021 budget scenario, the YMCA based on an unidentified Board member’s request will receive $100,000 in one-time funding. This $100,000 did not appear to be in the County Administrator’s recommended budget and therefore these funds needed to be found as the County staff was already tasked with slashing nearly $17 million across County Departments. These cuts include small decreases in requested funding to Empowerhouse, Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, Mental Health America Of Fredericksburg, Moss Free Clinic, Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging, Hope House, Rebuilding Together, Safe Harbor, Thurman Brisben Center, and the Virginia Community Food Connections. These organizations, along with the YMCA, are integral parts of our community and should be treated equitably during tough times. The YMCA has done some incredible work during this health crisis, as noted by a Free-Lance-Star article, where they are providing free childcare for first responders. However, the YMCA is only one of many organizations working during these trying times to support our community and the Board of Supervisors should not support an initiative that helps one at the expense of others. At a minimum, the Board should adopt a stance that fully funds these regional partners by reducing the total sum from the $100,000 earmarked for the YMCA.
