Fredericksburg Region Homelessness Initative
On January 9th, the Spotsylvania Board of Supervsiors were briefed by George Washington Regional Commission (GWRC) Continuum of Care coordinator about expanding an existing program in the Fredericksburg region. The presentation is provided below. The proposal for additional resources covered the entire Fredericksburg Planning District, but was broken down by locality.
The Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care is a federally mandated local planning body that organizes housing and services for homeless families and individuals.
At the presentation Supervisor McLaughlin asked for new data to demonstrate the cost savings (cost avoidance) by participating in the plan. The Continuum of Care coordinator stated that efforts were ongoing to secure local data to demonstrate the opportunity cost savings for Spotsylvania County. The proposal could be adjusted, but the initial request was FY19 funding of $161,000. and FY20 request of $139,000.
There did not appear to be any line item supporting this request in the FY19 Spotsylvania County budget. Additionally, the Supervisors did not demonstrate any great enthusiasm for the proposal in January.
Recent statistics from Spotsylvania County Public School Social Work Services show that at the end of 2017 over 600 children were considered homeless in Spotsylvania.
