Board of Supervisors Save Local Soap Box Derby

At the February 13th Board meeting, Spotsy Supervisors approved by a vote of 7-0 to use $15,000 in Tourism revenue to allow for the formerly Fredericksburg Soap Box Derby to operate in 2018. The $15,000 is the budget amount from last year's derby. The move from downtown Fredericksburg to Dominion Raceway in Spotsylvania will result in the Derby being renamed the Spotsylvania Soap Box Derby.

No Board members made any comment on this item, other than Supervisor Yakabouski, who wnated to ensure that Spotsylvania would be added to the name due to the new location.

As a note the County generates revenue through transient occupancy taxes. By Virginia Code a portion of that money needs to be spent on Tourism related activities or promotions.

According to Cathy Jett's reporting, of the 79 contestants in last year's Soap Box Derby, 55 were from Spotsylvania. The Spotsy Economic Development & Tourism Department has requested that $8,000 be earmarked to assist with future derbys.
